How to record your Mac screenwith captions

Captions make a walkthrough easier to follow, with the sound off or on. Here's how to record your screen with what your Mac already has, and how to get captions without typing them yourself.

Recording the built-in way

Your Mac can record the screen and your voice with nothing to install.

  1. Open the toolbar

Press Shift-Command-5. Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. QuickTime Player's File menu, New Screen Recording, opens the same toolbar.

  2. Turn on your voice

Click Options and choose a microphone under Microphone. Without one, the video is silent. This is also where you choose where the file is saved.

  3. Record and stop

Click Record and talk it through. When you're done, click the stop button in the menu bar. The video is saved where you chose.

WHAT'S MISSING

No captions in the file

The built-in recorder doesn't write captions. Your Mac does have Live Captions in Accessibility settings, but those are for reading along live, not for adding to a video. To caption a recording yourself, you'd listen back and type each line into a video editor, timing every one by hand.

Record and caption with Hyduri Capture

Hyduri Capture records, follows what you do, and writes down what you said. Recording and captions need macOS 15 or newer.

  1. Click the top button

Click the top round button on your screen. Choose Record Whole Screen, or a browser or other window.

  2. Set your options

With Sound records your voice. Zoom and Follow My Pointer makes the finished video move in on your work and follow you. Both stay on until you turn them off.

  3. Talk it through

Point and scroll as normal. A red border shows what's recording, and a timer sits under the button. None of this appears in the video.

  4. Stop and open it

Click the red button to stop. The video appears at the top of Recent. Click it to open the editor.

  5. Press Transcribe

It listens to your whole video and puts what you said along the bottom, like TV captions. The first time, your Mac may need a minute.

  6. Save Version

Your captions go into a new copy, such as _V2. The video you opened never changes.

Make the captions yours

DESIGN

Six looks

Press Caption Design and pick TV Bar, Clean Subtitle, Soft Pill, Hyduri Blue, Yellow Classic or Paper Card. Change the font, size, colour or background.

POSITION

Top, middle or bottom

Move the captions to wherever they cover the least. The bottom keeps your picture clean, just like on TV.

FIX

Click a word to change it

Pause the video and click the caption. Type the change and press Return. No timings to redo.

Languages and privacy

Captions come in English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi and Arabic. Choose Transcribe Language under Caption Design, then press Transcribe.

  • Captions are made on your Mac, so your words stay with you.
  • Arabic is the one exception. It uses Apple's speech service, so that sound may go to Apple. It reads right to left correctly.
  • Transcribe needs Dictation turned on. If it's off, the app offers to open the setting for you.
  • Speaking clearly and close to the microphone gives you fewer words to fix.

Before you share it

The same editor lets you Crop to the part that matters, Mute the sound from the saved version, and Add Text right on the video. Every save is a new version, so you can always go back.

When it's ready, press Send to Chat to drop it into your conversation, or Share it by AirDrop, Mail, Messages or Bluetooth, or save it to a drive.

Your next walkthrough, captioned
